Luau Kalamaku, explained

Luau Kalamaku is Kauai’s most-booked luau and its most theatrical. Held on the historic Kilohana Plantation estate just outside Lihue, it turns the usual luau show into a staged story, and the package you choose shapes the whole evening. Here is how it works.

The show and the setting

Kilohana is a 104-acre (42-hectare) former sugar estate with a 1930s manor house, now home to shops, galleries, Gaylord’s restaurant and a Koloa Rum tasting room. The luau takes place in a purpose-built pavilion with a center stage. The show tells the story of the first Tahitian voyagers to land on Hawaiian shores, with hula, drumming on handmade instruments, knife and fire dancers, and a cast photo session afterwards. Reviewers call it “a whole production”, and it holds 4.3/5 from 1,830 Viator and Tripadvisor reviews.

Packages and seats

Every package includes the show, a lei greeting and access to the craft fair. Hawaiian (from $189 direct, $187 on Viator) adds the buffet and an open bar until the show starts, with standard seating. Silver ($209) and Gold ($232) keep the buffet but move you closer to the stage. Manor House ($274 direct; the Viator version with champagne and front seats is $260) replaces the buffet with four plated courses at Gaylord’s in the plantation house and premium seats. Children 3 to 12 pay $59 to $92. The honest advice from reviewers: standard seats at the back can feel far away, so if the show is why you are going, upgrade.

Timing, train and transport

The ticket office opens at 4:45 PM, the craft fair runs 5:00 to 6:30, dinner 6:30 to 7:30 and the main show 7:30 to 8:15 PM. The plantation train is an optional add-on from 5:20 to 6:10: a narrated ride around the estate with stops where kids can feed the animals (it cannot be combined with Manor House dinner). Hotel transportation is sold only as part of specific packages, with pickups from 3:30 PM at hotels and condos, not private homes; call the luau at least 24 hours before to reconfirm, or the booking can be cancelled. Shows run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, plus select Mondays in summer and winter.
